Advantages Of Diesel Engines

Diesel engines offer the advantages of high torque and excellent fuel economy. Like other internal combustion engines, the diesel engine operates through a cycle consisting of four strokes: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. However, because diesel fuel is more viscous and less volatile than gasoline-yet has a lower auto-ignition temperature-the processes of mixture formation and ignition differ significantly from those of gasoline engines. The primary difference is that the fuel-air mixture in a diesel engine cylinder undergoes compression ignition rather than spark ignition. During operation, only air enters the cylinder; as it is compressed to the end of the stroke, the temperature rises to 500–700°C and the pressure reaches 40–50 atmospheres. As the piston approaches top dead center, a high-pressure pump injects diesel fuel into the cylinder, atomizing it into fine droplets that mix with the hot, high-pressure air. The mixture spontaneously ignites and expands violently, generating explosive force that drives the piston downward to perform work. At this stage, temperatures can reach 1,900–2,000°C and pressures can hit 60–100 atmospheres. This process generates substantial torque, which is why diesel engines are widely used in large diesel-powered vehicles.
