How To Properly Maintain A Gasoline Engine To Extend Its Service Life

To extend the service life of a gasoline engine, one must adopt a systematic maintenance approach that combines proper usage habits with regular servicing:

Engine oil is the engine's "lifeblood," performing the critical functions of lubrication, heat dissipation, cleaning, and sealing. Regularly changing the oil and oil filter is the top priority in maintenance. According to vehicle owner's manuals, mineral oil should be changed every 5,000 kilometers or 6 months; semi-synthetic oil intervals can be extended to 7,500 kilometers or 8 months; and fully synthetic oil supports a cycle of 10,000 kilometers or one year. Even if the vehicle is driven infrequently, timely replacement is essential; oil oxidizes and becomes contaminated during use, losing its protective properties, and using degraded oil for extended periods accelerates internal component wear.

 

The air filter acts as the engine's "respiratory guardian," filtering out dust and impurities from the air entering the combustion chamber. A clogged filter restricts air intake and causes the air-fuel mixture to become overly rich, thereby compromising power output and fuel economy. It is recommended to inspect the filter every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers, cleaning or replacing it based on driving conditions. In dusty or sandy areas, inspection intervals should be shortened to ensure clean intake air and prevent fine particles from causing wear on cylinders and piston rings.

As a key component of the ignition system, spark plugs directly influence combustion efficiency. Standard nickel-alloy spark plugs should generally be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers, while platinum types last 40,000 to 60,000 kilometers; high-performance iridium spark plugs offer an even longer lifespan of 60,000 to 100,000 kilometers. If symptoms such as engine vibration, sluggish acceleration, or difficulty starting occur, the spark plugs should be inspected immediately to prevent incomplete combustion and carbon buildup caused by poor ignition.

 

Stable operation of the cooling system is vital for the engine. Coolant not only prevents overheating but also inhibits rust and freezing. Regularly check that the fluid level remains between the MAX and MIN marks, and perform a complete replacement every 2 to 3 years or every 40,000 to 60,000 kilometers to ensure optimal heat transfer and corrosion protection. If an abnormal rise in coolant temperature is detected, stop the vehicle immediately for inspection to prevent cylinder block deformation or seal degradation caused by overheating.

 

Avoiding rapid acceleration, sudden braking, and prolonged idling during daily driving is key to extending engine life. After a cold start, allow the engine to idle for 30 seconds to 1 minute until the RPM stabilizes before driving off slowly; keep the engine speed below 2,000 RPM for the first 3 to 5 minutes to ensure the oil fully lubricates all moving parts. While driving, try to maintain an economical engine speed range of 2,000 to 3,000 RPM; for manual transmission vehicles, shift gears appropriately to avoid driving at high RPMs in low gears or low RPMs in high gears. Additionally, use gasoline that meets the vehicle's specifications and is sourced from reputable service stations; never use low-quality fuel to save money, as this can lead to clogged fuel injectors or carbon buildup in the combustion chamber.
